The more things change, the more they stay the same?

Some aspects of middle and high school social life today would be familiar, perhaps painfully so, to many generations. Others reflect the recent changes toward openness about sexual orientation and gender identity, but the shifts are far from complete or smooth. Guidance from adults is not always welcome, and not always effective even when invited.
